How to Lower Cholesterol Fast
High cholesterol—especially high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol—raises heart-disease risk. You cannot safely flush it out in a few days, but consistent daily habits can lower LDL meaningfully within weeks to months.
1. Cut the biggest cholesterol-raising foods
Reduce saturated fat from ghee, butter, cream, full-fat cheese, red meat, fried snacks, bakery items, and processed foods. Avoid trans fats found in some packaged baked goods and fried foods.
Simple swaps:
-
Use mustard, groundnut, olive, or rice-bran oil in moderation instead of large amounts of butter or ghee.
-
Choose grilled, roasted, steamed, or home-cooked foods over deep-fried snacks.
-
Replace full-fat dairy with curd, low-fat milk, or smaller portions of cheese.
2. Add soluble fiber every day
Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol absorption in the gut. Aim for oats, beans, lentils, chickpeas, rajma, apples, guava, pears, flaxseeds, and vegetables daily.
Easy Indian options:
-
Vegetable oats or dalia for breakfast.
-
A bowl of dal, rajma, or chana with lunch or dinner.
-
One tablespoon of ground flaxseed in curd, smoothies, or roti dough.
3. Move for at least 150 minutes weekly
Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging can improve LDL, triglycerides, and HDL (“good”) cholesterol. A practical target is 30 minutes most days, or 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.mayoclinic+2
A 10–15 minute walk after meals is an easy starting point, especially if you are new to exercise.
4. Support weight, sleep, and habits
Losing excess weight, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, managing stress, and sleeping 7–9 hours can all support healthier cholesterol levels.
Focus on one change at a time: for example, replace fried evening snacks with roasted chana or fruit, then add a daily walk.
5. Know when medicine is needed
Lifestyle changes are powerful, but some people need statins or other cholesterol medicines—particularly if LDL is very high, they have diabetes, or they already have heart disease. Do not stop prescribed medicines or self-start supplements without medical advice.
