No-Refined-Sugar Festival Mithai: Date, Jaggery, and Fruit-Based Treats

Oct 28, 2026

Festive mithai can feel indulgent without a bag of white sugar. Dates and dried fruits provide natural sweetness and a sticky base for ladoos and bars, while jaggery brings a deep caramel-like flavour to chikkis, halwas, and syrups.

Why These Swaps Work

Dates blend into a thick paste that binds nuts, coconut, and seeds together, making them ideal for no-cook ladoos and dry-fruit barfi. Figs, raisins, apricots, and mango pulp add their own sweetness, colour, and festive character.

Jaggery retains some molasses and therefore contains small amounts of minerals such as iron, potassium, and magnesium that refined sugar lacks. However, it is still a concentrated sweetener and should be used in moderation rather than treated as a “free” health food.

  2. Dry-roast ½ cup mixed almonds, cashews, and pistachios; chop or pulse lightly.

Keep It Balanced

Use small serving sizes, pair sweets with nuts or protein-rich foods, and enjoy them as part of the celebration rather than as an everyday snack. Jaggery-sweetened mithai can still raise blood sugar significantly, so people managing diabetes should be especially portion-aware.
